Pope John Paul II: Builder of Bridges (DVD) Pope John Paul II: Builder of Bridges (DVD) » Pope John Paul II: Builder of Bridges (DVD)

As witnessed by the public outpouring of grief that attended his death, Pope John Paul II was more than just a Catholic leader--his deeply felt humanitarianism transcended race, religion, and culture and made him a truly beloved world figure. The Pope's intense desire to connect with all peoples of the globe was reflected in his many travels abroad (over 100 trips in 26 years, making him the most travelled pope in history); these voyages were not merely social visits, but profound attempts to heal the sometimes millennia-old rifts between the Catholic Church and the world's other faiths. The 264th pontiff was the first to visit England and meet with Anglican Church leaders; the first to travel to Eastern Orthodox countries since the Great Schism of the 11th century; the first to enter a mosque and reach out to Muslims; and, most significantly, the first to actively improve Christian-Jewish relations by visiting WWII concentration camps and the sacred Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. Reporter John Roberts examines this extraordinary legacy of world peacemaking in the special CBS news report POPE JOHN PAUL II: BUILDER OF BRIDGES.

The Gospel According to St. Matthew (DVD) The Gospel According to St. Matthew (DVD) » The Gospel According to St. Matthew (DVD)

Christ's life is presented with respect for the traditional religious doctrine of the Church, but Pasolini's trademark naturalism humanizes his subject and makes him his own. The documentary-style camera captures Christ's meetings with the men who were to become his disciples, the Last Supper, the betrayal by Judas, and the Crucifixion. The impassioned music of Bach, Mozart, and Prokofiev lends a further aura of spiritual intensity to the proceedings.DVD Features:Region 0 EncodingSnap Case

The Holy Girl (DVD) » The Holy Girl (DVD)

Lucrecia Martel (LA CIENAGA) returns with THE HOLY GIRL, a powerfully understated coming-of-age tale in which a teenage girl grows up in a religiously fervent society. The film takes place during a medical convention in an Argentinean hotel, where its characters stumble upon each other. Amalia (Maria Alche) is a pretty, conflicted teenager who has become consumed with the religious concept of vocation, which she has been learning in Catholic school. She lives with her divorced mother, Helena (Mercedes Moran), who works at the hotel, and spends most of her time with her mischievous friend Josefina (Julieta Zylberberg). But when a seemingly random stranger rubs up against her in a crowd, she begins to think that she has found her calling. It turns out that the stranger is an influential doctor, Jano (Carlos Belloso), with whom Helena has coincidentally begun to fall in love. The more that Amalia considers this chance encounter, the more determined she is to pursue it.As if adolescence weren't difficult enough, growing up submerged in a deeply religious Latin American culture makes it all the more challenging. Featuring impressively reserved performances across the board, Martel's film bravely shies away from overly dramatic confrontations. It's the unspoken messages that matter the most in the audacious and deeply luminous THE HOLY GIRL.This film screened as part of the 42nd New York Film Festival organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
