Pope John Paul II: Builder of Bridges (DVD)
As witnessed by the public outpouring of grief that attended his death, Pope John Paul II was more than just a Catholic leader--his deeply felt humanitarianism transcended race, religion, and culture and made him a truly beloved world figure. The Pope's intense desire to connect with all peoples of the globe was reflected in his many travels abroad (over 100 trips in 26 years, making him the most travelled pope in history); these voyages were not merely social visits, but profound attempts to heal the sometimes millennia-old rifts between the Catholic Church and the world's other faiths. The 264th pontiff was the first to visit England and meet with Anglican Church leaders; the first to travel to Eastern Orthodox countries since the Great Schism of the 11th century; the first to enter a mosque and reach out to Muslims; and, most significantly, the first to actively improve Christian-Jewish relations by visiting WWII concentration camps and the sacred Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. Reporter John Roberts examines this extraordinary legacy of world peacemaking in the special CBS news report POPE JOHN PAUL II: BUILDER OF BRIDGES.

One needn't be a sailing aficionado to appreciate Carroll Ballard's WIND, an thrilling sports drama based on the true story of Dennis Conner, the man who caused national embarrassment in 1983 by becoming the first American to lose the America's Cup trophy in the 140-year history of the race. Unfortunately, in Ballard's film, the Cup isn't all Will Parker (Matthew Modine) loses. His girlfriend Kate (Jennifer Grey), also an expert sailor, already walked out on him when she was denied a place on his crew because of her gender and Will failed to protest the decision. Following his defeat, Will heads to Utah to find Kate and convince her to team up with him in building a brand-new, improved yacht that they will sail together in an attempt to win America's Cup back from the Australians. With the help of the brilliant Joe Heiser (Stellan Skarsgard) and the wealthy Abigail Weld (Rebecca Miller), Will puts everything he has into one last chance at redemption. Ballard's by-the-books genre film is aided greatly by the performances of its four leads (most notably, Modine and Skarsgard). It also doesn't hurt to have the picture shot by John Toll (BRAVEHEART, THE THIN RED LINE), one of cinema's most celebrated cinematographers.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.85Audio: Dolby Digital 2.0 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: TrailersInteractive Features: Interactive Menus Scene Selection
